Generally, female praying mantises do not fly, because their wings cannot support their weight. Rather, the wings are used to scare off potential enemies by flapping them as they lift their limbs. This defensive pose scares off some predators, saving the mantis. A threatening ap- pearance, which is nevertheless normal mantis beha- viour.
