During the mating season, male California sea lions become territorial, and protect their harem, which can be up to 30 females in number. Male California sea lions are distinct from females, marked by their larger size, thick necks, and silver cranial sagittal crest. Here, this male is ‘crowned’ by female sea lions of his harem. Despite their territorial behaviour, this male sea lion al- lowed us to get close, while inspecting us occasionally.
